NFPA recorded 10,050 firefighter injuries during training activities in the United States in 2024, out of 53,575 across all activities. Academies concentrate that exposure in one place, with recruits still building their skills and props built for live fire.
Members in training and junior members are both named covered classes under Accident and Sickness, and classroom training and training exercises are named covered activities, as is travel to and from them.
